Technology to Support Learning

Published on Nov 19, 2015

It's about student engagement and understanding; tools are to expedite this!

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

MEANINGFUL USE OF TECHNOLOGY

IT'S ALL ABOUT LEARNING

OF ALL RESOURCES AVAILABLE

INCREASING STUDENT AWARENESS
Students need to be aware of the many online (and physical) resources provided through the district and state, as well as free tools available to them online.

Linking resources from designated websites increases accessibility to and, hopefully, use of reliable, credible resources.

PROVIDING QUALITY RESOURCES

ACCESSIBLE 24/7/365.25
Online resources offer the flexibility of access by students with online access and devices outside the school building as well as the school day.

Assignment of username and password for each student for authorization of online subscriptions expedites utilization of those tools.

ENCOURAGING LEISURE READING

FAMILIARITY INCREASES USAGE!
Research shows that students who read for pleasure are more fluent in informational reading as well. Readers also exhibit more creativity and higher levels of life satisfaction on general.

Familiarizing students with print and non-print materials available, as well as how to request and access those resources online, will promote leisure reading.

Systems to identify high-interest materials, including student input, will improve collection development practices as well.

REINFORCING DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP

Digital citizenship expectations should be embedded in daily practices. Teachers should model as well as reinforce safe, ethical, and responsible use of tools and resources continuously.

TO ENCOURAGE STUDENT CREATIVITY

CURATING RESOURCES
Curating resources for students provides a platform from which they can expand their horizons in technology use.

Encouraging students to take risks in creating projects to reflect their learning will increase variety and enhance both student and teacher satisfaction.

COLLABORATING WITH TEACHERS

TO INTEGRATE TECHNOLOGY
Starting with a few teachers to create projects which showcase students' potential in creativity and flexibility can lead to other teachers' interest in attempting new assessment options.

SHARING IDEAS WITH PEERS

EXPERIENCES = STRENGTH IN NUMBERS
Looking for opportunities to share ideas with peers in other settings improves instruction across schools and districts. Openness to others' ideas, and willingness to look for opportunities to modify practices to improve learning, is very important.

OUR TEACHERS NEED TO KNOW

THE DEPTH AND BREADTH OF ONLINE RESOURCES
Teachers in all disciplines should be exposed to resources which could improve their students' learning options. Targeted instruction and resource curation can improve likelihood that teachers will integrate new tools and resources in their plans.

TEACHING PARENTS TO SUPPORT RESOURCE USE

SHARING IDEAS FOR SUMMER LEARNING
Parents are integral to successful implementation of online learning options. Their understanding of concepts such as flipped classroom, blending learning, gasification, long-term digital projects, and the need for students to practice good digital citizenship is imperative.

Providing informational sessions for parents on innovative programs, as well as introductions to online resources and the importance of student learning during school breaks, may be helpful.

CHOICES IN SHOWING THEIR LEARNING?

WHAT DO THE STUDENTS SAY ABOUT
Students deeply appreciate opportunities for flexibility in showing what they learn. These comments are from the collaborative math project in Fall, 2013, and the photographs which follow are students creating digital products for a similar project in October, 2014.
