My biggest epiphany was moving myself from the traditional viewpoint of what literacy is. In class, we struggled with the definition because literacy does not fit in one, black and white box. Literacy can be understanding written words or pictures or even simple symbols. As our class defined it, it is the purposeful interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and creation of various texts.

In order to be a successful member of today’s world, we need to prepare our students to consider more than just what the words are at a surface level. What is the point if students know what words mean, but can’t understand the message? Students need to consider author’s purpose and the intended audience. They need to be able to examine the text and turn it into something new by analyzing messages and creating a unique product. Presentation tools, such as Powtoons and Prezi, Thinkglink, and coding allow students to build literacy skills and gain a deeper understanding.

In addition, while I feel as if I am constantly crunched for time, students need the time to play for a purpose and explore in order to find what interests them. Through this time of exploration, students can discover new and exciting topics, such as coding, that cannot always be covered in a traditional school setting.

I have killed the love of learning by getting so hung up on meeting the expectations of the state and district. While these standards need to be my guide, there is still room for creativity and technology to promote discover learning and exploration. I am lucky enough to have the tools and a school with 1:1 capabilities. I need to let go of some control and give power back to the students by providing time and guidance so new ideas and discoveries can be made on their own.
