The Marlin
The marlin symbolizes reward. The marlin was a reward to Santiago's hard work and perseverance.

The Lions
The lions symbolize pride. They appear in Santiago's dream to remind Santiago of a time when Santiago could hold his head up high in pride.

The Sea
The sea symbolizes a friend. It helps Santiago and provides for him.

The Sharks
The sharks symbolize evil.
They take away Santiago's fish, the fish he spends two whole days out at sea for, mercilessly without remorse

The Boy
The boy is a symbol of undying friendship. The boy seems to be Santiago's true friend and made Santiago feel like someone truly cared about him.
