What are Sustainable Cities?

  • A sustainable community is one that is economically, environmentally, and socially healthy and resilient.
  • Examples: Copenhagen Denmark, Stockholm Sweden, Singapore, and San Francisco
  • Sustainability is the ability to be maintained at a certain balance with the environment

How is this achieved?

  • In San Francisco the city emphazies the use of public transport with its hybrid electic buses that have cut the cities carbon emissions by half
  • The local government provides residents with high efficiencywater heads, and other water saving devices that have allowed residents of the city to only use 49 gallons of water compared to the national averaged of 80-100 gallons.
In Demark there are super cycle highways that have dramtically reduced emissions and have increased the population using bycicles by 45% causing people to become healthier

Government v. Business

  • Often times in the cities which have implemented environmental polices, they were government funded mostly locally
  • In the U.S., there is the question of government encroachment and letting the free market to do its thing because green innitives are often hindered because businesses are in it to make a profit
