INTRODUCTION
Kitchen garden, also known as a potager is a space separate from the rest of the residential garden – the ornamental plants and lawn areas. Most vegetable gardens are still miniature versions of old family farm plots, but the kitchen garden is different not only in its history, but also its design. It is a source of herbs ,vegetables and fruits but it is also a structured garden space with design based on repetitive geometric patterns.
RELEVANCE
Kitchen gardening is something all of us can do to make our cities greener. It’s a garden where you grow your own food— herbs, vegetables, fruits. It gives city dwellers a chance to produce their own food fresher, healthier, and learn in the process about local varieties.
1.Clean air: Your balcony, terrace or courtyard can become your green lungs amidst the dust and dirt around you. The more you plant, the more fresh air with good oxygen you get.
2.Aesthetics matter: Plants make your home greener, more peaceful, uplift your mood and make you feel more positive.
3.Organic vegetables: Growing own fruits and vegetables can offer the opportunity to reduce the amount of pesticides that are used commercially, making them healthier
4.Cheap and easy:Kitchen garden can help us grow things at home and bring down the need to buy from the market, hence, save money on food purchase.
5. Health friendly: It is a great way to engage the whole family in physical activity. Gardening is known to reduce levels of stress hormones.
ADVANTAGES OF KITCHEN GARDEN
- It’s not expensive for the kitchen gardens.
- The Kitchen Gardens production is rich in nutritional content.
- These don’t contain any toxic materials like vegetables you’re going to get on the market.
- This helps to counter the food issue that now prevails in the country.
- One of Kitchen Garden’s strengths is that the vegetables contain vitamins and minerals of all kinds.
- You will get your family a regular and convenient supply of healthy vegetables.
- It’s a good outdoor habit that will stick in your lifetime.
Untitled Slide
- We can grow 100% organic vegetables that have high nutritional and health quality.
- It has great potential where you can sell to your neighbors or on the market some of the goods.
- Kitchen Gardening is a fun activity that reduces mental stress in your busy working life.
PREPARATION
- Deciding the location: A kitchen garden should be in a sunny with water source near by so I decided to plant the lettuce and spinach at the backy of our house.
- Preparing the area: Kitchen gardens should have rich, fertile soil that is well drained. Use a shovel or spade to turn over the dirt in the area. Remove weeds, including their roots, to prevent them from returning.
- Picking the type of plants or vegetables: Include plants that you plan to use in your cooking. Buy seeds online or find seeds or seedlings at your local nursery.
- Plan the arrangement of your plants : Decide which plants may need a trellis and find the right spot for it.Determine how you will use plants and hardscape edging to define your garden space and design any pathways for your kitchen garden.
•Plant your vegetables: Water your plants before planting to loosen the root balls. Pay attention to plant spacing and timing, which will vary by plant.Water the new plants immediately. Continue watering regularly, but do not over water.
