WHO AM I AND WHAT I AM DOING HERE?

  • I'm Danielle Davis, educator
  • Most of us in assume this position either in a school, church, or other community organization
  • This presentation is a refresher to some but we welcome newer professionals as well today

WHAT IS AT-RISK?

The National Center for School Engagement defines at-risk youth as:

AT-RISK YOUTH

  • Mentally ill
  • Homeless or transient
  • Involved in drugs and alcohol
  • Abused sexually, physically, or emotionally
  • Lacking social or emotional support

MORE AT-RISK

  • Neglected at home or live in stressful family environments
  • Invovled with delinquent peers
  • Students with learning disability

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM YOUR AT-RISK YOUTH:

  • Truancy
  • Fighting
  • Commiting acts of vandalism
  • Sexually active
  • Dropping out of school

SHORT TERM EFFECTS OF AT-RISK BEHAVIORS

  • Fighting/bullying
  • Disruptive behavior in class
  • Under age drinking

LONG TERM EFFECTS OF AT-RISK BEHAVIORS

  • Imprisonment
  • Low wage or unemployment
  • Drug and alcohol abuse
