SUCCESSION

PRIMARY SUCCESSION

  • When a series of changes occur in area with no ecosystem.
  • Example- After volcanic eruption the ground is ash and rock
  • Pioneer species is the first living thing to show up in the area
  • Pioneer species- lichens and mosses

SECONDARY SUCCESSION

  • When changes occur after a disturbance to ecosystem
  • Example- forest fire
  • Natural disturbances- fires, hurricanes, tornados
  • Human disturbances- farming, mining, logging

CLIMAX COMMUNITY

  • Climax community is the final stage of succession
  • When the plants restore them selves
  • Remaining unchanged until destroyed again
