• Anything extra or left over after the needs are met is called a surplus
• Having a surplus made people work harder Just so that they could eat
• With a surplus people have leisure time to do fun things

• If people have more than they need to survive then have a surplus
• In order to get away from the subsistence level people must have a surplus
• Countries that specialize and use machines more likely to have a surplus
