Students often use too many direct quotations when they take notes, resulting in too many of them in the final research paper. In fact, probably only about 10% of the final copy should consist of directly quoted material. So it is important to limit the amount of source material copied while taking notes.

And then I explained to him how naive we were, that the world did know and remain silent. And that is why I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Wherever men or women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must – at that moment – become the center of the universe.

Harriet Tubman once said “I can’t die but once.” (Quotes.com) Harriet knew she would die at some point in her life, so she might as well help as many people as she can and free as many slaves as she can before she meets her demise. Although Harriet Tubman was born a slave, in 1849 at the age of about 29, she decided to escape from the plantation where she resided. After escaping slavery, she went back to the South 19 times to save her family and others from the hardships of slavery (Africans in America par. 3). She could have stayed in the North and completely forgotten about the life that she had just escaped from, but she was determined to help others. Harriet Tubman shows characteristics of selflessness, courage, and strength throughout her life journey which made her a prominent figure throughout the civil war.

Carl Sagan was perhaps one of the most influential scientific minds that the world has ever experienced. When he learned that stars were actually extremely distant suns, his world was changed and the magnitude of the universe opened up to him. Another strong motivator into science came with his reading of a popular science fiction book of the time, The Burroughs Tales. The stories were not extremely sound scientifically, but still presented ideals of adventure and the unknown. The idea that life could exist elsewhere in the universe fascinated Sagan and remained with him for the rest of his life (Eicher). Thesis:
