Pay for Play?

  • Scholarships, a form of pay for play?
  • Who gets paid? 50-60 players? 1st, 2nd, or 3rd string?
  • Inconsistent with academic mission
Is pay based on position or performance? How is it decided who gets paid?

NCAA President Mark Emmert: "To convert college sports to professional sports would be tantamount to converting it to minor league sport."

USA Today: Most NCAA Division I athletic departments take subsidies. Only 23 of 228 Division I athletic departments generated enough money to cover their expenses in 2012.

According to the sporting news, if the texas longhorns paid their student athletes, it would equate to $6mill a year. This would cover $10k per year salary for student athletes seperate from scholarships and the other services addressed. This would put quite a burden on these schools.
