STRUCTURE OF THE CEREBRUM

2.
CEREBRUM
Consists of two large masses called the left and right cerebral hemispheres.
They are mirror images of each other.
The corpus callosum, a broad flat bundle of axons, connects the two hemispheres.
A layer of dura matter separates them.
3.
CEREBRUM
The surface of the cerebrum has many ridges called gyri
They are separated by grooves
A shallow groove is called a sulcus
A deep groove is called a fissure
4.
FISSURE
A longitudinal fissure separates the right and left cerebral hemispheres.
A transverse fissure separates the cerebrum from the cerebellum.
Several sulci divide each hemisphere into lobes.
5.
LOBES
Frontal lobe- forms anterior part
Parietal lobe- posterior to the frontal lobe and separated by central sulcus
Temporal lobe- lies below the frontal and parietal lobes and is separated by the central sulcus
Occipital lobe- forms the posterior part of the cerebral hemisphere and is separated from the cerebellum
6.
CEREBRUM
Insula- deep in the lateral sulcus and is covered by parts of the frontal, parietal and temporal lobes
Cerebral cortex- a thin layer of gray matter, the outer most part of the cerebrum covers the gyri and dips into the sulci and fissures
It contains nearly 75% of all the neuron cell bodies in the nervous system
