PLANT ADAPTATIONS

RAINFOREST:

  • Climate is warm and wet, with poor soil nutrients
  • Decomposing plants make something richer than soil
  • Leaves allow water to drain off towards the roots
  • Trees have a thin and smooth bark so other plants can't grow on them

DESERT:

  • Plants have longer roots so they can absorb more water
  • Cacti have waxy coats so that less water can escape
  • They store water in the stems or the branches
  • They grow very slowly to use less water
  • Spines protect it from animals trying to take its water

ARCTIC:

  • Flowers track the sun while they are in a cupped shape
  • They put their seeds closest to the sun so they can reproduce themselves
  • Plants in the arctic grow close close to the ground so they get more heat
  • Plants that live in the arctic can do photosynthesis at night

GRASSLANDS:

  • The roots of some plants can survive a fire
  • Grazing animals can't pull these plants out of the ground
  • Plants that live in the grasslands have thick bark for protection

WATER BODIES:

  • Plants underwater grow thicker stems so they can support leaves full of water
  • They grow close to the shore so they can break down salt for nutrients
  • Most of the plants float to get closer to the surface where there is more light
