Thinking
Attributes of successful strategic thinkers to recognise and develop:
A vivid imagination:
able to see new combinations and possibilities, innovating and blending
A broad perspective:
expanding and diversifying perspectives, visually stretching a perspective and having a panoramic view of operational habits
Ability to juggle:
paying attention to many things at once, dealing with incomplete and constantly changing information, keeping many balls in the air
Ability to deal with things over which you have no control
A consuming desire to
win: passion and conviction to drive strategy
How
do you develop
the right skills?
Engage in the arts or a creative endeavor: music, painting, cooking, gardening
"Strategic thinking typically occurs outside the confines of the office and work hours".
Draw your strategy, expand it outward, upward and downward. Use shapes, colours or objects to represent themes.
"Others eyes and ears see and hear things that can expand and enrich scenarios."
Identify role models.
Keep track of things you can't control. Bring in outside viewpoints to challenge, think about unrelated and adjacent industries, and other country perspectives.
"Listen to hard questions without feeling the need to respond immediately".
"Having a cadre of strategic thinkers is a distinct competitive business advantage"
