CAPTAIN COOK
Captain James Cook was a famous officer in the Royal Navy.
He was sent in 1770 to sail the ocean to look for ‘terra australis incognita’ (the unknown southern land)

Captain Cook did find something, he found Australia.
Cook met the Aboriginal people, but he did not think they used the land, because they did not live like people in England.
He declared the land to be ‘Terra Nullius’ (No-mans land) and claimed it for the British Empire.
9.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
For a long time, nothing!
Until 1785, no one wanted to sail all the way down to Australia (or New Holland, as they called it back then)
In 1785 Britain needed somewhere new to put its convicts.
