CAPTAIN COOK
- Captain James Cook was a famous officer in the Royal Navy.
- He was sent in 1770 to sail the ocean to look for ‘terra australis incognita’ (the unknown southern land)

- Captain Cook did find something, he found Australia.
- Cook met the Aboriginal people, but he did not think they used the land, because they did not live like people in England.
- He declared the land to be ‘Terra Nullius’ (No-mans land) and claimed it for the British Empire.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
- For a long time, nothing!
- Until 1785, no one wanted to sail all the way down to Australia (or New Holland, as they called it back then)
- In 1785 Britain needed somewhere new to put its convicts.
