CAPTAIN COOK

  • Captain James Cook was a famous officer in the Royal Navy.
  • He was sent in 1770 to sail the ocean to look for ‘terra australis incognita’ (the unknown southern land)

  • Captain Cook did find something, he found Australia.
  • Cook met the Aboriginal people, but he did not think they used the land, because they did not live like people in England.
  • He declared the land to be ‘Terra Nullius’ (No-mans land) and claimed it for the British Empire.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?

  • For a long time, nothing!
  • Until 1785, no one wanted to sail all the way down to Australia (or New Holland, as they called it back then)
  • In 1785 Britain needed somewhere new to put its convicts.

  • What do you know about the Convicts?
  • Think, pair, share

WHY ELSE DID THEY WANT AUSTRALIA?

  • There were other reasons that the British wanted to own Australia.
  • Military - the navy
  • Resources
  • Political - the French
