Slide Notes

This haiku Deck will show stereotypes in modern media, mostly based on gender, for example girls like pink men like blue. Or that girls like dolls and men like trucks it just isn't true either way. But we still will listen to it. Another stereotype is that girls are stay at home moms while the dad works, yet another is that men are big, buff, and tough, while girls just aren't. Due to that we will underestimate many of the futures great women sports players. For the next few slides I will show examples of stereotypes and dispute them most times citing real world facts.

ESTIMATED AMOUNT OF MEN AND WOMEN IN THE WORLD(PERCENTAGES)

This is a rough estimate at the percent of men to women the reason this is here will be on the next slide.

PERCENT OF MEN TO WOMEN IN MOST MODERN MEDIA

This just shows how far off most shows can be. Most shows have one girl to every three-two guys. The Big Bang theory had only Penny to its four male characters for its first three seasons. The show the Super Friends had only Wonder Women for most of its running time. The Lego Movie only had two female leads. Star Wars only had three named females in its entire original trilogy. Most shows nowadays try to have at least one female lead and if it is a movie she will be shown as a strong independent woman, which is good, but most of the time when a male is the lead as the love interest which usually conflicts the image they try to build. But some shows and films brake this stereotype, He man had multiple female recurring characters, and then He man's literal sister series She ra was about a female character who saved He man once or twice.

YOU MEAN WOMEN CAN OPEN IT?

This was a common misconception in the 1800s-late 1920s and even farther then that. This poster says that they finally made a ketchup bottle with such an improved cap that even a women can open it with her dainty hands. I feel dirty just typing that, there was so much sexism towards women and men in that last few centuries that it is kind of odd to look back at some famous leaders of armies that were female, or some men who were weak or sickly and went on to do great things. I'm pretty sure that someone like Joan of ark easily disproves that women are dainty, and Franklin Dwight Roosevelt disproves that all men are beacons of health who are strong, for those who don't know he had polio and was most of the time in a wheelchair or leaning on a cane. These are probably the most famous examples and there are still tons more of them, all of which can be used to disprove this poster, I mean mindset from that past two centuries.

THAT MEN ARE THE MAIN CHARACTER

This is the cover art for the movie Army of Darkness, yes it is as awesome as it looks, and no that is not the focus of this slide, the focus of the slide is how men are usually the main character. In this movie our main character is Ashley J Williams , and he is obviously a man, let's look at another movie Shaun of The Dead, well that one is self explanatory Shaun is a boys name, what about The Expendables, no that's a bunch of old men. Well those are just action movies, you might be saying, then we move on to kids movies. Shrek is a man, so is a lot of the cast of shows on Nick, Disney Channel, Cartoon Network, and that's about it. Why is this so common you are probably not asking, well the reason for action movies is probably the likely hood of a certain gender going there, have you seen that cliché moment on a movie or show were a guy is dragged to see a romantic comedy while he wanted to see "Blood n' Guts 5:The pre-pre-prequel" yeah I thought so. This just shows what Hollywood thinks of the demographic, and most of the time this is true, when I saw the Expendables with my father there was an extremely large amount of men, about 32 by my count, whilst there was only 3 women. This just shows the demographic for action movies, but in the next slide I am going to level the playing field.

THE BECHDEL TEST

  • Are there at least two women?
  • Do they talk to each other?
  • About something other than a man?
This is the bechdale test it is a way of judging on whether or not women are depicted properly. This can usually show whether or not those women shown are somewhat stereotypical. A surprising amount of shows and moves don't pass this, Indiana Jones didn't pass(except for the god awful kingdom of the crystal skull). The better Star Wars (3-6) didn't pass. Grown ups two, the Lego movie, the list goes on and on.

THE REVERSE BECHDAL

  • Are there at least two men?
  • Do they talk to each other?
  • About something other then a woman?
Bet you didn't see this one coming! Yes there is a reverse Bechdal and unlike the Bechdal, almost everyone passes it. It actually is a challenge to find movies that don't pass. A movie like Shallow Hal Gets His Gal is the only example I can think of. In it Jack Black is womanizer who is cursed to see only the positive things in people, that is about it, he only either talks about womanizing to his friends or talks to woman. So he failed really really bad. The Bechdal and it's reverse both show ways to handle men and women, and to break the stereotype that the always spend time talking about the other gender.

ROSIE THE RIVETER

This is the now famous World War 2 propaganda of Rosie the Riveter, this was a way to show that woman have a place in the war, with them building the weapons and machines that the American soldiers would use in the battle. The poster which is obscured in this slide shows Rosie saying "We can do it!" Which inspired people that women could do things, and weren't just there to cook, and clean, they could help win wars.

GUESS THE FAMOUS PERSON!
