SCHOOL ENROLMENT

Steady growth
Intermediate enrolment has doubled since its inception in 2008 and is poised for even stronger growth next year with 4 classes from Alliance
Increasingly we hear from parents that they are wanting their children to come earlier a) to adjust to the environment/reduce the number of transitions and b) the intermediate program has an excellent reputation
High school enrolment is up by 40% since we began the application process and the Excelleraider programming

WHO IS IT FOR?

Attracts high performers who work hard and enjoy learning
Effort and ability to perform on exams are strongly correlated with success
Can accommodate students with LD but not to the same extent
Provides programming to gifted that may not be addressed elsewhere as effectively (has been withdrawn by the board)
Gifted programming funding is combined with spec Ed funding and it is up to the board to set its priorities
Although it does not have the population of a larger centre, a small pop shouldn't mean 0 services. One the 62 boards in Ontario, the NNDSB is one of 5 that didn't have senior high programming for gifted students prior to IB
Should provide an extension for enriched learners from WSS and WFSS (enriched and steam) for senior high
Unique learning environment of motivated peers
Assuming the smartest kids can achieve their full potential without being pushed is misguided
Gifted kids who skip a grade are 60% more likely to earn patents and doctorates and twice as likely to earn a stem doctorate
Our best evidence is that we should never stop supporting them with harder work and ensure they are stimulated
They are the children who change our world

Helps students learn effective use of time in high school
Learn to study, problem solve
UBC research says that IB students have a stronger work ethic and do better at first year,
Partly because they have figured this out,
Partly they know how to meet uni expectations,
Made their mistakes in high school where the support and timelines are greater

RESULTS MAY 2016

External evaluation is a big part
80% often in 1-3 exams
20% from classroom teachers
Excellent results in our first year, well exceeded expectations
