Solids

  • Fixed Volume and Shape
  • Very little space between particles
  • Particles can only vibrate in place
  • Not easily compressible
  • Particles usually in a pattern

Liquids

  • Fixed volume but indefinite shape
  • Shape changes to whatever object it is in
  • Particles are close together, but not as close as solids
  • Particles can "slide and glide"
  • Solid water is less dense than liquid water

Gases

  • No fixed shape or volume
  • Particles are not close together
  • Particles can move in any direction
  • Easily compressible
  • No regular arrangement in particles

Plasma

  • Gases that are electrically charged
  • Most common state of matter in Universe, but not on Earth
  • Found on Earth in: Plasma TVs, fluorescent lights, and lightning
  • Makes up stars

Bose-Einstein Condensate

  • Most recently discovered state of matter
  • Form when supercooled to close to 0 kelvin
  • 0 kelvin is the temperature when molecules stop moving
  • 0 kelvin is also known as "absolute zero"
  • 0 kelvin does not exist anywhere that we know of

Patterns

  • Space between particles increases as you go from:
  • Solid->Liquid->Gas
  • Amount of movement of particles increases as you go from:
  • Solid->Liquid->Gas
  • Solids are more dense than liquids unless it is water.
