PRESENTATION OUTLINE

States of matter

Solids

  • Has a definite shape
  • Has a definite volume

Melting

  • To make or become liquefied by heat
  • EX: An ice cube melts into water
  • The ice melts because of heat

Liquids

  • Does not have a shape
  • Has a definite volume
  • Slip and slide past each other
  • The melting point of ice is 32 degrees

Evaporation

  • The changing of liquid into gas often under the influence of heat
  • EX: The water evaporates in the hot summer sun
  • Water uses heat to evaporate

Boiling

  • The action of bringing a liquid to the temperature at which it bubbles
  • And turns to vapor
  • The water turns into water vapors on the stove
  • Water boils at 212 degrees

Gas

  • Does not have a definite shape
  • Does not have a definite volume

Gas

  • Free to roam
  • Particles are free

Condensation

  • Water that collects as droplets on a cold surface when humid
  • is in contact with it
  • EX: Drops of water on a soda bottle
  • Condensation uses vaporization
  • dew point is about 60 degrees

Liquids

  • Particles are together but not free
  • Particles slip/slide past each other

Solidification/Freezing

  • The action of solidifying
  • EX: The lake freezes in the winter
  • Solidification uses condensation
  • freezing point of water is 32 ferinheight

Solids

  • Particles are tightly packed together
  • Particles vibrate quickly in place
