State Bird:Cardinal
The Cardinal is the state bird of 7 other states.Females are buffy brown, with red wings.Males are a brilliant scarlet red.The male and female have a jet-black mask.

State Fish:Channel Bass
It is the official fresh water fish. They are found in large numbers along the coastal waters. A channel bass can weigh up to 75 pounds. The largest channel bass was between 30 to 40 pounds.

State Fruit: Scuppernong Grape
They are normally greenish or bronze.The skin on the scuppernong grape is thick and tart.Small green seeds are in each grape.They are sweet,but the seeds are bitter.

State Vegetable: Sweet Potato
North Carolina is the largest producer of sweet potatoes.The sweet potato is high in vitamins.The sweet potato is only distantly related to the potato.

State Rock: Granite
Granite is used as a building material.White granite quarries are the largest open-face granite quarries in the world.Granite from this quarry is gleaming.Granite became the official state rock in 1979.

State Tree: Long Leaf Pine Tree
Long leaf pine trees continue to supply North Carolina with many wood products.There are eight types of pine trees.During the colonial period and early state hood,the pine tree was a vital part of the economy.It became the official state tree in 1963.

State shell: Scotch Bonnet
The Scotch bonnet is found along the Atlantic Coast.The Scotch bonnet is a gastropod.It can be in water from 50 to 150 feet.

State Motto: "To be rather than to seem"
The motto is a literal translation of a phrase from a sentence.The complete sentence is wrote in Latin.North Carolina had no state motto at first.

State Dog: Plott Hound
The plott hound is very athletic.It is also very muscular.It has small white patches on its feet.Plott hounds are eager to please.

State Stone: Emerald
A emerald crystal is the largest ever found in North Carolina.It was found in 2003 near Statesville.A greater variety of minerals are found in North Carolina. An emerald can sell for $500,000.
