State Berry Strawberry
North Carolina designated the strawberry (genus fragaria) as the official red berry and blueberry (genus vaccinium) as the state blue berry in 2001. Berries are grown throught-out North Carolina and consumers can pick their own berries at farms. There are only 60 calories in one cup of fresh berries and zero grams of fat. Strawberries and blueberries are important to our agriculture.

State Bird
Male Cardinals are a brilliant scarlet red,females have buffy brown with reddish wings. The females builds the nest while the male gets the food. The Cardinal is the state bird of 7 States. The Cardinal sings nearly year-round.

State Flower
The stem of a Carolina Lily is 4 feet tall. The flower pedals are red-orange with brown spots and curl black to over lap.

State Horse
Mustangs are often referred to a wild horse. The the Mustang is a feral horse found now in the Western United States. The name Mustang comes from a Spanish word mesteño or monsteno meaning wild or stay. Most Mustangs are of the light blooded or warm blooded type of horse.

State Reptile
The Eastern Box Turtle is a sub species of one of the two sub species of Box Turtle in the United States. It is the only land turtle found in the United States. Box Turtles are slow crawlers and extremely long lived. Eastern Box Turtles feature a sharp beak stout limbs and their feet are webbed.

State Mammal
The Gray Squirrel lives in trees and in borrows. The Gray Squirrels predictors are humans,hawks,weisels,raccoons ,snakes,and more. The Gray Squirrel eats a range of food like tree bark, nuts,walnuts,berries,acorns,and others. The Gray Squirrel lives in back yards and trees.
State Shell
North Carolina designated the Scotch Bonnet as the official State shell in 1965. The Scotch Bonnet is found along the Atlantic Coast from North Carolina to Brazil. North Carolina was the first State to adopt a State symbol. It is found in North Carolina water depth to 50-150.

State Carnivors
The Venus Flytrap faces a high extinction in the wild. The Venus Flytrap only eats insects. The Venus Flytrap is a small plant who structures can be described as a Rosetta of 4-7 leaves. Flytraps that have more than 4-7 leaves are colonies formed by Rosetta that have been divided beneath the ground.

States Flag
North Carolina has designated the colors red and blue in 1945. Although the nation flag has no meaning specified to the colors red and blue the great Seal does. The flag was carried by the North Carolina regiments along with the confederate colors throught-out the Civil War. No specific meaning were attached to the colors in the legistration but traditionally colors do have specific meanings.

States Stone
North Carolina designated the official State stone in 1973. An Emerald Crystal thought to be the largest ever found in North America was found in 2005. Emeralds are green variety of beryl a mineral which comes in many colors. Emerald is antiquity have been mined in Egypt since 1500bc and India and Australia since at least 14th century.
