STARFISH CRISIS

SEA STAR WASTING SYNDROME

  • In Anchorage, Alaska
  • Numerous sea stars are dying from a strange disease, the symptoms include;
  • unnatural twisting of the arms, and white spots on the starfish's body

SEA STARS DYING IN SAN DIEGO

  • The epidemic known as sea star wasting syndrome, has gone 2,500 miles and has reached San Diego
  • The disease has seemingly stopped since November
  • Aquarium workers are encouraged to monitor the animals and to be cautious

IS CAPTIVITY TO BLAME?

  • Research has shown that more starfish in captivity than in the wild
  • Stress in animals in captivity is higher, and are more likely to get sick
  • This is quite common in zoos and aquariums
  • Workers probably didn't think that highly of it

WILL THIS CONTINUE?

  • Scientists have proven that this infection has no link to nuclear crisis
  • No one knows if the disease will reoccur
