PRESENTATION OUTLINE

STAR TREK

AND ITS PHYSICS (OR LACK THEREOF)

SOUND & VACUUMS

  • The woman is sucked out into space, which is a vacuum
  • Following the principle that sound can't travel in a vacuum...
  • Her screams cannot be heard
  • Physics in Scene 1 - CORRECT

HOLOGRAMS

  • Holograms are made out of light
  • Light is not solid
  • Thus, the man should no be able to catch the object
  • In other seasons, people continue touching holograms
  • Physics in Scene 2 - INCORRECT

SPACE SHIP COLLISION

  • The captain crashes the ship into the station
  • The force of the sudden impact throws him forward
  • Physics in Scene 3 - CORRECT

ASTRONAUTS & PRESSURE

  • First, your body will swell, followed by possible burns
  • One will then suffocate by hypoxia
  • Nitrogen bubbles form in the bloodstream
  • One's body cools, and finally blood will boil
  • Physics in Scene 4 - CORRECT, but it won't occur that quickly

WARP JUMP

  • The ship is at rest
  • It suddenly goes into warp speed
  • The sudden change in speed should have squished them
  • Physics in Scene 5 - INCORRECT

BLACK HOLES

  • Nothing except a star can create a black hole
  • Black holes destroy matter equal to them
  • Thus, a small drop shouldn't have destroyed a whole planet
  • Also, there is nothing that can contain a black hole
  • Physics in Scene 6 - INCORRECT

ACCELERATION & FREE FALL

  • Sulu falls first, followed by Kirk
  • Kirk keeps his body straight & pointed down
  • This lessens his surface area and air resistance
  • Thus, he manages to catch up to Sulu
  • Physics in Scene 7 - CORRECT

ENERGY

  • A yellow star goes into a destructive supernova
  • A star needs a lot of mass & energy to do this
  • Yellow stars do not meet those requirements
  • Instead, they often just burn out w/out destroying anything
  • Physics in Scene 8 - INCORRECT

WARP SPEED

  • The Enterprise suddenly stops out of warp speed
  • The crew doesn't move
  • The sudden stop should have thrown them forward
  • Physics in Scene 9 - INCORRECT

EXPLOSIONS

  • Scotty says that the blast of one can push them away
  • The force & impact of the blast propels them forward
  • Physics in Scene 10 - CORRECT

WATER PRESSURE

  • The Enterprise is 76.2 m high, and is fully submerged
  • Kirk & Bones dive to the entrance of the ship, near the bottom
  • While possible, they shoudl have experinced more side effects
  • The deepest anyone has gone freediving w/out aids is 126 m
  • Physics in Scene 11 - POSSIBLE

FORCE OF IMPACT

  • The Enterprise is hit by phaser blasts
  • The force of the impact throws the crew forward
  • Physics in Scene 12 - CORRECT

VACUUMS & PRESSURE

  • Holding your breath in a vacuum is a bad thing to do
  • The air in your lungs will expand without air pressure
  • Best thing to do is to exhale quickly
  • Physics in Scene 13 - INCORRECT

VACUUMS & SOUND

  • As the guy is sucked into space, his screams are heard
  • This shouldn't happen, as space is a vacuum
  • Sound cannot travel in a vacuum
  • Physics in Scene 14 - INCORRECT

GRAVITY & FREE FALL

  • Spock says that the internal gravity systems are failing
  • However, as they fall, they do not experience zero-g
  • The crew is crashing and rolling into things, and not floating
  • Physics in Scene 15 - INCORRECT

GRAVITY

  • The ship is dead in space, and quite far from Earth
  • It suddenly starts getting pulled in by Earth's gravity
  • It falls & gains speed very quickly
  • Coming from rest, the ship shouldn't gain speed that quickly
  • Physics in Scene 16 - INCORRECT

DIRECTION OF APPLIED FORCE

  • Kirk is kicking the core downwards
  • It should be kicked at a sideward angle to right the core
  • An object will move in the direction of the applied force
  • The core rights itself on Kirk's last downward kick
  • Physics in Scene 17 - INCORRECT
