Strategy 1: Expanded

Question: 256 + 341

• Expand the numbers so they look like this: 200 + 50 + 6 300 + 40 + 1
• Add the ones, tens & hundreds. 200 + 50 + 6 300 + 40 + 1 ---------------------- 500 + 90 + 7
• Add them all together. 500 + 90 + 7 = 597

Strategy 2: Algorithm

Question: 226 + 147

• Stack the numbers.
• Add the ones together. 6 + 7 = 13 (ones) Put the 3 in the ones column and add a 1 to the tens column. This is how you carry 10.
• Add the tens. 1 + 2 + 4 = 7 (tens) Put the 7 in the tens column.
• Add the hundreds. 2 + 1 = 3 (hundreds) Put the 3 in the hundreds column.
• 226 ( don't forget the extra 1 in the tens column) 147 ----------- 373 is the answer.

Strategy 3: Rounding & Compensating

Question: 190 + 54

• Round 190 to 200 by adding 10. This makes It a tidy number.
• To compensate you have to subtract 10 from 54. When adding you always have to take from 1 of the numbers and give it to the other number.
• The new question will be 200+44
• The answer is 244
