PRESENTATION OUTLINE

HAPPY ST PATRICK'S DAY

TO CELEBRATE, HERE IS THE STORY THE GREAT SAINT

HE WAS NOT BORN IN IRELAND

  • He was born in Roman Britian. Probably Kilpatrick, Scotland
  • His parents were Calpurnius and Conchessa
  • His father was a deacon and his grandfather a priest
  • Historians date his birth to 430s AD

As a young lad, he was rebellious and wanted nothing to do with Christianity.

Patrick was a foreigner and he refused the patronage of anyone. He was beaten, robbed and imprisioned.

St Patrick did not banish snakes from Ireland. There were never any to begin with. It is a metaphor for banishing the darker aspects of paganism.

After 40 years of hardship, Patrick died on March 17, in 461 or 493 AD.

His work in evangelising Ireland and the growth of monasteries made Ireland a major intellectual centre.

As mainland Europe fell apart after the collapse of the Roman Empire, Ireland remained stable and the launch pad for a renewed evangelising effort.
