THE LIFE OF MOTHER SETON

BACKROUND

MARY WAS BORN IN NYC IN 1744. SHE CAME FROM A WEALTHY, STRONG EPISCOPALIAN FAMILY.

GROWING UP

  • At age 19, St. Elizabeth met her first love. William Seton. He was a buisness man.
  • 2 years later, they were parents of five children.
  • William soon lost his business, which led to bankruptcy. Following this bad luck, a sickness was brought to him.
  • Doctors sent William along with his family to Italy for a better climate for his Tuberculosis to heal.
  • In this new enviroment, Mary was introduced to Catholicism which would change her life.

INTRODUCTION TO A NEW LIFE

  • Italy introduced Elizabeth to new Catholic friends.
  • She soon decided to be received to the church.
  • Elizabeth was left a widow and led back to NY.
  • The Anti- catholic bigotry led her to forget about her family.
  • She was asked to be president of Mount St. Mary's college and Seminary.

A NEW LIFE

  • Emmittsbury, Maryland would be her new home where she established 2 new schools.
  • She established the St. Josephs Academy, and the first free school for Catholic girls,
  • In 1809, she made vows of poverty, charity, and obidience.
  • She established the Sisters of Charity with the help of two other women.
  • She was now known as Mother Seton.

LIFE AFTER

  • Mother Seton dedicated her entire life to religion.
  • Today, there are 6 religious communities from the one she established.
  • She taught those around her to love and praise God.
  • St. Elizabeth died of Tuberculosis in 1821.
  • Her feast day is January fouth, and a day we should celebrate.
