SAINT CLARE OF ASSISI

BY: DIANA ESTRADA MR. SCHILLER

Saint Clare was born on July 16, 1194. Her feast day is August 11. Saint Clare is the patron saint of eye disease, good weather, needleworkers, goldsmith, laundry, and television.

When St.Clare was a child she dedicated herself to pray.
When she was a child she was known to be a kind, sensitive, gentle and a prayerful child . Sometimes she took food of her plate and later gave it to the poor. When Clare was 15 her parents made an arrangement for Clare to get married, but she refused. One day when she was 18 she heard St. Francis preach for a Lenten serves. So on Palm Sunday Clare left her fathers home and went to meet with Francis . When St.Clare was there she gave her rich gown for a robe with a veil and St. Francis himself cut Clare's hair short.

One day Clare's father found out that she had become a nun and he was furious when he found out. So he went to find Clare and when he did he demand that Clare come back to his house. He reminded Clare she was to get married. But Clare said" I have one husband and his name is Jesus Christ." Clare's father went storming off.

St. Francis of Assisi told the nuns rules for the Order of San Daminano: They are not allowed to where shoes, they cannot eat meat, they where to remain silent most of the days, and they had to sleep on the floor.

After St. Clare joined the Order of San Daminano her little sister Agnes also joined the order of San Daminano. Shortly after Agnes joined the Order of San Daminano Assisi was under attack and the poor Clare's prayed for the safety of Assisi. After the attack Clare found out that St. Francis was very ill, so Clare cared for Francis until the end of his life which was 1226.

When Clare died in 1256, shortly after her death the Order of San Daminano was now called the Order of Saint Clare because the priest approved of her idea of having her name instead of San Daminano. More than 20,000 nuns where supporting
the Order of Saint Clare.

Before Clare died Clare was very sick so she could not attend mass but St. Clare could hear the mass from her window. Saint Clare died on August 11, 1256. Saint Clare was canonized by Pope Alexander IV on September 26, 1256.

Saint Clare was given sainthood by saving Assisi with a religious staff and by using the moonlight. Clare ran in the house and grabbed the religious staff and she ran back outside just at the right moment because there was just enough moonlight to shine through the religious staff. It scared the attackers away. Assisi was safe once more.
