HISTORY OF CHRISTIAN BROTHERS

  • The Brothers' Rule states that the mission of the Institute is "to provide a human and Christian education to the young, especially the poor, according to the ministry entrusted to them by the church."
  • Members of the order take vows of chastity, poverty and obedience, and are required to give their services without any remuneration and to wear a special habit of coarse black material, consisting of a cassock, a hooded cloak with hanging sleeves and a broad-brimmed hat.

HISTORY OF ST. JOHN BAPTIST DE LA SALLE

  • De La Salle was born to a wealthy family in Reims, France on April 29, although some say 30, in 1651.
  • Pope Leo XIII canonized him on 24 May 1900 and Pope Pius X inserted his feast in the General Roman Calendar in 1904 for celebration on 15 May
  • His mother died on July 19, 1671, and on April 9, 1672, his father died.
