Sprains continued
-3rd degree sprain
+ most severe ankle injuries, the ligament has been completely torn.
-This injury is very common.
Mechanism
-It happens in sports or just walking off of a curb you could stretch or tear a ligament in your foot.
-10-15yr olds have a 30%

Anatomy
There are three ligaments that make up the ankles

-the calcaneofibular ligament that keeps the ankle from rolling over on its side.
-the posterior talofibular ligament.
Symptoms
1st degree sprains
+mild pain, some swelling, difficulty jogging or jumping.
Symptoms
2nd degree ankle sprains
+bruising, moderate pain and trouble walking.
Symptoms of
3rd degree sprains
-severe swelling, lots of pain, extreme loss of motion and walking can be quite painful
Treatment
-R.I.C.E for 1st,2nd and 3rd degree sprains
-(Rest)when having a sprained ankle get lots of rest or it's going to get worse.
-(Ice)ice it so it reduces pain and swelling, do this for 10-15 mins for 3-4 times a day.
-(Compression) take ace bandages or any type of bandage and wrap up your foot, this way your foot is immobilized and it is provided support.
-(Elevation) make sure to elevate your foot as much as possible so it can
minimize swelling.
Rehab continued
First degree rehab.
-
Rehab
-Second degree sprain rehab.
+splints and anti-inflammatory medication.
Rehab for third degree sprains
- for rehab cast is needed for immobilizing the sprain, for at least 2-3 weeks.
A fact about rehab.
-This year researchers found over 40% of ankle sprains lead to chronic problems if not properly treated
Conclusion
-The word "sprain” means injury to soft tissues, muscles and ligaments.
-sprained ankles hurt and if not treated right may lead to chronic problems if not treated right.
