Slide Notes

Thrilling Fact:
It is common to use a bee to represent spelling-related things because spelling competitions are called Spelling Bees.

Why are they called that?
A "bee" is an old term for when a group of neighbours get together to work on a big job together--kind of like bees in a hive all helping work on the same goal...
(Old-timey examples: quilting bee, barn raising bee, husking bee, etc)

This HaikuDeck slide show is a spiffy modern-day Bee where members of grade 4 community/hive can "gather" to work on the common goal of becoming stronger spellers...

Follow basic instructions to get electrifying results...

You will see slides with a spelling list word...
+ there will often be a spelling rule next to it

A) Looking at the screen, say the word out loud...notice the shape of the word, the number of letters, etc...then say the rule out loud...

B) Spell the word (don't just spell letters out loud)--very important: WRITE IT DOWN!
Looking at the screen while writing is not cheating...it is good...writing it properly helps imprint proper spelling in the automatic memory part of your brain...

C) Say the word out loud again when you are done writing it down correctly...

D) Now, look away from the screen, and turn your written word over so it can't be seen either...

E) Using a second sheet of paper, say the word out loud, then spell it by writing it down, then say it out loud one more time...

F) Check your spelling.
If correct, go to the next slide...
Important: if you made a mistake, fix it right away--say the correct letters as you write them down...try the word slide again starting at A)...you will immediately get stronger...

The English language can be very tricky because many sounds have many different spellings...

... But English has more words than any other language so you can say things in so many more different ways that it's really quite amazing...

... In English we have a specific word for just about every single object or idea no matter how big or small...no other language is so jam-packed with possibilities...

found "ou" says "oww" like "ouch!"

WEIRD SPELLINGS MAKE SENSE AFTER ALL!!

Click on the link below to hear all about it in an an odd vid clip:

might "i-g-h-t" says "ite"

HOT TIP:

Think about the way they said silent letters in Old English when you are spelling "i-g-h-t" words...

It helps to remember how to spell words like "might" when you make all the letter sounds...

...like some wacky Chaucer dude teleported into our current year!!

kite "i-t-e" also says "ite"

"i-t-e" VERSUS "i-g-h-t" ... says "ite"

If you know that a word with an "ite" sound will probably be spelled EITHER with an "i-t-e" OR with an "i-g-h-t"....

THEN,
you should try it out both ways...actually write the word down with both spellings...

For example, another word for a lamp is either...

lite OR light

If you write both options down, you will usually recognize the correct one right away...this is because your brain has read the word thousands of times over the years, and so it will tell you which one "just feels right"

--works most of the time!

You've reached the finish line!

The pot of gold at the end of the rainbow = better spelling skills.
