Summary
This novel is about a teen aged girl in syracuse who was raped in a party. In desperation she busted out the party and later on was seen as an outcast and spent rest of the 9th grade in misery.

Setting
The primary setting of this novel at an high school in Syracuse, New York."she rides the school bus on the first day to school and hopes to strike an conversation with " lab partners and gym buddies"(3).

Melinda is also seen spending most of her school time in her closet."I agree to stay after school.I hang out in my refurbished closet. It is shaping up nicely"

Character
Melinda sordino is the main character of this novel .Melinda goes to a party with her friends and is raped byAndy Evans. This caused drastic changes in her life and she initially stopped speaking to anyone.Once she said to herself "It is easier not to say anything. Shut your trap, button your lip, can it. All that crap you hear on TV about communication and expressing feelings is a lie. Nobody really wants to hear what you have to say"(9).

Conflicts
This novel is filled with both external and internal conflicts .when she was raped, Melinda turned into a very cautious person.She does not let herself to do anything social, in fear that history could repeat itself.

External conflicts
Melinda also battles society ,she also has to live with parents that do not understand her and high school full of students that hate her.

Theme
This novel depicts many themes .One of it being isolation .Melinda starts the school year isolated by her outcast status, by the secret of her recent rape, and by the fact that her rapist goes to her school.One great thing about This novel is that Melinda recognizes that her isolation is harmful and takes steps to reconnect with others."I must talk to Rachel, she looks at me without expression, i try on a smile, size medium. Hey i say. Hmm she responds"(180).

Transformation
Another theme of this novel is not to be afraid to speak out . Melinda did not tell anyone that she was raped and had to go through the 9th grade with her peers disliking her.

Speaking up
In the end of the novel Melinda breaks her shell and confronts her enemy in the closet ,Andy Evans also called "IT"."i reach in and wrap my fingers around a triangle of glass .I hold it to Andy Evan's neck. I push hard just enough to raise one drop of blood"(195).

Who should read this
This novel contains some sexual content but can be read by people aged 14+ and who find problem novels interesting as something to relate to.
