-MASCOT-
Naranjito (Spain World Cup)
Since their inception in 1966, World Cup mascots had always taken human or animal form - and when in 1982 Spain unveiled Naranjito the surreal smiling orange, everyone understood why.

-4 rare&amazing animals-

  • The Spanish Lynx.
  • The Brown Bear.
  • The Iberian Wolf
  • The Mediterranean Monk Seal
-The Iberian Wolf-
One of the last remaining European Wolf populations is here in Spain. Another recovering species which is showing a good increase in numbers. In the 1970's the numbers of the Iberian Wolf dropped down to around 400 but with conservation and protection of the species the number of Wolves expected to be living here is now around 2000, which is excellent.

-The Brown Bear-
The Brown Bears in Cantabria known in Spanish as "Oso pardo cantábrico" are yet another amazing creature you may not have expected to be in Spain but they have been here for many years and at the beginning of the 20th century around 1000 bears were living in the country but due to excessive hunting the number of bears has dropped down to around 100 maybe even less.

-The Spanish Lynx-
The drop in numbers throughout the 20th century was due to disease outbreaks of myxomatosis in the 60's and a viral haemorrhagic disease in the 90s which devastated rabbit populations in Spain and thus the Lynx's food chain was ruined.
Numbers have grown though in the past 10 years to a much more positive number. In 2000 there was only 100 of these animals left but with careful monitoring and conservation the number has risen to some 300 animals been reintroduced.

-The Mediterranean Monk Seal-
The Monk Seal in the Mediterranean is on the critically endangered list through excessive Hunting for its skin back in the early 20th century. Though nowadays they are protected from the skin industry there are the deliberate killings by fishermen who see them as competitors for fish, the seals getting caught up in fishing nets, loss of habitats through development and tourism and disease are all effecting the numbers.
The Mediterranean is known as one of the Worlds rarest mammals and only an estimated 500 in the whole World are expected. Very hard to see, they are normally brown or grey with light tan patches on the back and bellies.
