TELESCOPES

  • Telescopes are tools used to see things that are too far away
  • This device gathers electromagnetic radiation
  • There are two types of telescopes, reflecting and refracting
  • A major telescope that has been launched into space is the Hubble telescope

SPECTROSCOPE

  • Spectroscopes analyze the amounts and types of spectral light
  • The spectral light comes from stars and planets
  • They break down the light emitted or absorbed by stars or planets
  • When the light is absorbed it turns the light into lines of color
  • An example of a spectroscope is continuous spectra

SATELLITES

  • A satellite is an artificial body placed in orbit around the earth or moon or another planet in order to collect information or for communication
  • Satellites Are used for television, telephones, navigation, business and finance, weather, climate, and environmental monitoring, safety, land stewardship, envelop ant and space science.
  • There are four different types of satellites- they are low earth orbits, sun synchronous orbits, geosynchronous satellites, and geostationary satellites.
  • Satellites are used for many things and are used to discover many things beyond the earth that we can not see
  • Satellites get into space on the tip of a rocket, the name of the rocket is called the launch vehicle

SPACE PROBES

  • A space probe is a craft that travel to space to photograph, study, and land on celestial bodies
  • They take pictures of planets, measure properties of space, & find unknown info on planets
  • Landers, orbiters, and rovers are sophisticated probes
  • Two future probes Earth will be sending are New Horizons and Venus Express
  • Some probes carry telescopes that can peer far into the universe by detecting visible light

SPACE PROBES CON'T

  • As a probe travels through the atmosphere, it's instruments identify gases
  • and measure properties such as pressure and temperature.
  • The largest volcano in the solar system was found on Mars thanks to the
  • space probe, Mariner 9
  • Examples: Sputnik, Mariner 10, & Magellan
