In 1976 the first space shuttle was made by NASA
April 12, 1981 the first time NASA sent it to space
The space shuttle program sent over 3 million pounds of cargo into space.
The longest any shuttle stayed in orbit was 17.5 days, in November 1996.
The liftoff weight of the space shuttle was 4.5 million pounds.

sPACE cHALLENGER
The space shuttle Challenger was one of NASA's greatest triumphs
It was the second shuttle to reach space, in April 1983.
It successfully completed nine milestone missions.
But Challenger was also NASA's darkest tragedy
On its 10th launch, on Jan. 28, 1986, the shuttle exploded 73 seconds

Columbia disaster
On Feb. 1, 2003, space shuttle Columbia broke up as it returned to Earth,
NASA suspended space shuttle flights for more than two years
on mission STS-107, left Earth for the last time on Jan. 16, 2003.
However, STS-107 stood apart as it emphasized pure research.
