SOUTH ASIA RELIGIONS

BUDDHISM

  • India has a Buddhist population of 0.8% and has been growing rapidly in recent years
  • Buddhism is also the most important minority religion in Nepal
  • The earliest members of the Indus Valley Civilization sometime between 3000 and 1800 B.C.
  • Buddhism is a religion based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama
  • Buddhism is the teaching of how to view the world and other things in different ways.

HINDUISM

  • Hindus believe in a one, all-pervasive Supreme Being
  • Hindus believe in karma, that you are effected by your thoughts and actions
  • Hindus believe that the soul reincarnate going through many births until all karmas have been fixed
  • Young Hindus are taught to participate in Hindu festivals and holy days in the home and temple
  • Young Hindus are taught daily worship in the family shrine room

ISLAM

  • They believe that there is only one God, the name of their God is Allah
  • They believe that Muhammad is his Prophet
  • They believe in a continued existence of the soul and an existence after death
  • All that is required is to believe and recite the Shahada (oath)
  • They mostly believe that one must follow the six articles to be considered a Muslim

SIKHISM

  • The central teaching in Sikhism is the belief that there is only one God
  • Sikhism considers spiritual life and secular life to be intertwined.
  • They listen and follow the teachings of many gurus (11)
  • Regardless of the gender its soul is considered to have a feminine aspect
  • The Sikh holy scripture is a guide to ridding the self of ego through the practice of meditation

CHRISTIANITY

  • Christians believe that Jesus died for our sins, was buried and was resurrected
  • They believe salvation is achieved when you receive Jesus in faith
  • They believe that the Bible is the Word of God and that its teaching is the final authority
  • They believe that man was created specifically to have a relationship with God
  • They believe that sin separates all men from God
