SOUND WAVES

  • Exist as variations of pressure in a medium such as sound.
  • The vibrating air then causes the human eardrum to vibrate.which the brains interprets as sound
  • They travel through air in much the same way as water waves travel through water.
  • Since water waves are easy to see and understand, they are often used as an analogy to illustrate how sound waves behave
  • Can also be shown in a standard graph,as shown here.

LIGHT WAVES

  • Visible light waves are the only electromagnetic waves we can see.
  • We see these waves as the colors of the rainbow
  • Each color has a different wavelength
  • Red has the longest wavelength and violet has the shortest wavelength
  • When all the waves are seen together, they make white light

LIGHT WAVES

  • Water vapor in the atmosphere can also break apart wavelengths creating a rainbow
  • Cones in our eyes are receivers for these tiny visible light waves.
  • The sun is a natural source for visible light waves and our eyes see the reflection of this sunlight
  • The color of an object that we see is the color of light reflected
  • All other colors are absorbed.light bulbs are another source of visible light waves.

LIGHT WAVES

  • Light is at once both obvious and mysterious
  • We are bathed in yellow warmth every day and stave off the darkness with bulbs.
  • We catch glimpses of its nature when sunbeam angles through a dust filled room.
  • Some of the properties of light, such as absorption, reflection, refraction and diffraction

LIGHT WAVES

  • You might think scientists know all the answers, but light continues to surprise them.
  • We've always taken for granted that light travels faster than anything in the universe
