PRESENTATION OUTLINE

APPLICATIONS OF SOUND

BY: BLAKE IMHOFF

BASICS OF SOUND

  • Sounds are vibrations that travel through liquid and solid particles.
  • Sound travels at a speed of 340m/sec. One must go about 770mi/hr to break the sound barrier.
  • It can be used for medical purposes, war, hunting, and locating.

ULTRASOUND

  • Ultrasound is a sound frequency that is above the level of human hearing.
  • Ultrasound can be used for medical diagnostics. By receiving the reflected sound doctors can tell where the organs are and there functionality. You can also use it too see a baby inside its mother.
  • Ultrasound is used in echolocation.

Echolocation

  • Echolocation is the use of ultrasound to detect/see objects and judge their distance. Echolocation is used by bats, dolphins and humans.
  • How echolocation works is the source creates a high frequency blast of noise. The sound waves then hit an object. The reflected sound is then received by the source and that sound can help determine the distance of objects and what their doing.
  • Submarines use radar that produces electromagnetic waves or sonar that produces pulses of sound to tell where enemies and other objects are. Bats and dolphins use this to detect prey.

SONIC WEAPONS

  • Sonic weapons are weapons that use sound to injure or kill an enemy.
  • They work by increasing the decibels of sound they produce to cause damage to an enemy. Pain starts to take place at 135 decibels.

SOUND IN FILM

  • This can be used through music to set the mood of a scene.
  • The music can be fast paced and exhilarating to make something seem more "intense" (Haha! Sound Pun) and epic. Like an huge battle or crazy karate fight.
  • It can be slow paced to ether create a mood of sadness or suspense. Like in a funeral scene or a high pitch ringing sound can be used in a horror movie to create suspense.
  • Finally it can be used to create cool effects. Like the classic, loud, and action movie style punch. Or during a horror movie it can be used to make a bad jumpscare a lot scarier then it actually is. Which is annoying and makes me grumpy.
