1080

RED HAT, BLACK HAT, YELLOW HAT thinking

BLACK HAT

  • There is no antidote if someone gets poisoned by 1080
  • 1080 may poison water systems such as tanks, streams and other water supplies
  • A possum carcass can take up to six months to decompose and in that time a dog or other non-target animal could eat it and get poisoned
  • 1080 kills many non-target species such as dogs, deer, pigs and birds
  • 1080 does not break down quickly in a posioned body so there is a high risk of secondary poisoning
  • If non-target animals eat 1080 they will suffer a long, horrible death

YELLOW HAT

  • Nesting success with many birds has increased rapidly since the use of 1080
  • Native plant and tree species show better growth rates since 1080 use
  • 1080 is killing possums that are carrying around TB
  • 1080 breaks down in water and the environment
  • It does not harm water animals such as fish so there is no risk of getting poisoned while eating fish that has come from an area that has 1080.
  • It kills possums, stoats and rats who are eating our native wildlife

RED HAT

  • I believe we should continue the use of 1080, because it kills possums, stoats and rats who are killing our native birds. 1080 has helped increase the survival rate of newborn chicks and it is decreasing the percentage of TB infected cattle herds. Since the use of 1080 the chance of survival for many native birds has risen rapidly. For example, in 2007, 87 Whio (Blue Duck) ducklings were hatched and 67 made it through until they were old enough to fly whereas in 2005 25 hatched and only 17 grew old enough to fly. This is why I think we should continue the use of 1080.
