Inmates were mainly Jews, Poles, Romani, and Soviet soldiers. 1.1 million people were estimated to have been killed. Some notable inmates were Anne and Otto Frank. Auschwitz is now a dormant symbol of the holocaust.

It consisted of Aushwitz 1 (the original camp) Aushwitz 2 (Berkenav (a combination concentration/extermination camp)) Auschwitz 3 (menowitz (labor camp for factory)) and 45 satellite camps.

Commandants: Rodolf Höß (4 May 1940- Nov. 1943; 8 May 1944- Jan. 1945) Arthur Leibehenshel (Dec. 1943- 8 May 1944)

When Soviet troops approached Auschwitz January 1945, most of the population was evacuated and sent on a death march, all remaining prisoners ere liberated on January 27, 1945.

Josef Mengele
Experimented using twins. He was a member of the team of doctors assigned to select wether new arrivals were gassed immediately or not.
