ACID

  • proton donors that yield hydronium ions in water solution, or electron-pair acceptors that combine with electron-pair donors or bases.
  • (MD) chemical that is highly reactive to a variety of multiple substances

BASE

  • compound that reacts with an acid to form a salt, as ammonia, calcium hydroxide, or certain nitrogen-containing organic compounds.
  • (MD) substance that reacts with acid to form a product that contains either salt or nitrogen

COLLIGATIVE

  • depending on the number of particles (as molecules) and not on the nature of the particles
  • (MD) determining how many particles there are and not determining what the particles are like

COLLOID

  • a mixture having particles of one component, with diameters between 10*-7 and 10*-9 metres, suspended in acontinuous phase of another component
  • (MD)mixture with varying diameters that are suspended in another component

CONCENTRATION

  • The amount of a specified substance in a unit amount of another substance.
  • (MD) amount of a certain substance in a certain amount of another substance

DILUTION

  • the process of reducing the concentration of a solute in solution, usually simply by mixing with more solvent
  • (MD)reducing the levels of concentration in a solute by putting in more solvent and mixing

IMMISCIBLE

  • incapable of being mixed to form a homogenous substance
  • (MD) when substances cannot be mixed together

MISCIBLE

  • capable of being mixed
  • (MD) where substances can be mixed together

MOLALITY

  • the number of moles of solute per kilogram of solvent
  • (MD) the number of moles in a measurement of a solvent

MOLARITY

  • the number of moles of solute per liter of solution
  • (MD) the number of moles in a measurement of a solution

OSMOSIS

  • the tendency of a fluid, typically water, to pass through a semipermeable membrane into a solution where the solvent concentration is higher, thus equalizing the concentrations of materials on either side of the membrane
  • (MD) when fluids go back and forth into a cell to balance the content inside and out of it

PRECIPITATION

  • the precipitating of a substance from a solution
  • (MD)when a substance forms a solid product inside of it

SATURATED

  • containing the maximum amount of solute capable of being dissolved under given conditions
  • (MD) having as much of a solute as possible that can be dissolved depending on the conditions given

SOLUBLE

  • capable of being dissolved or liquefied
  • (MD) something that can be dissolved or put in a liquid state

SOLUTE

  • The substance dissolved in a given solution
  • (MD) what's being dissolved in a solution

SOLUTION

  • a homogeneous, molecular mixture of two or more substances.
  • (MD) the product of mixing two or more substances

SOLVENT

  • having the power of dissolving; causing solution
  • (MD) being able to dissolve substances

SUPERSATURATION

  • to increase the concentration of (a solution) beyond saturation; saturate abnormally
  • (MD)to increase the concentration of (a solution) beyond saturation; saturate abnormally.

SUSPENSION

  • the state in which the particles of a substance are mixed with a fluid but are undissolved
  • (MD) when a substance is mixed with a fluid but it doesn't dissolve

UNSATURATED

  • capable of absorbing or dissolving more of something
  • (MD) something that can either dissolve or absorb more substance
