Religions Represented-

1. Primarily Shiite Muslim
2. Growing amount of Secularism- promoted through reforms by the shah; greatly opposed by traditionalists and other religions

ROLE OF WOMEN

  • Growing amount of western ideas for women's roles; more and more job opportunities
  • In rural areas, women were still very traditional; had domestic jobs

EDUCATION

  • Education was encouraged to all
  • Secondary schools were free
  • Males and females had access but females were more limited in higher education
  • Illiteracy rates lowered but remained high in rural villages
  • Financial aid could be extended to higher learning and new universities were made

FAMILY STRUCTURE

  • Dad and son are head of family
  • Legal age for males to get married is 21 while for females it is 18
  • ^However, most marriages(especially rural) occurred at younger ages; 18.9
  • Divorce is practiced but looked down on. Women are limited but still can divorce
  • Institutional activity is heavily influenced by family affairs

AFTER THE REVOLUTION

  • After the revolution, Shea Law was adopted
  • ^this drastically changed the way people lived
  • All evidence of western culture stopped
  • Islamic ways of living were enforced everywhere

RELIGIONS

MORE THAN 85 PERCENT SHI'A ISLAMIC. THE REST IS MOSTLY SUNNI MUSLIM

ROLE OF WOMEN: GREATLY OPPRESSED

  • Many rights were taken after the revolution
  • Had to be veiled
  • Education is less available
  • Were more segregated from men
  • Domestic work became more common

WOMEN BECAME MORE LIMITED. SEGREGATION IN SCHOOLS B/W GENDERS

WOMEN LOST ALL POWER IN THEIR FAMILIES
