He was homeless in NY
He saw how bad the slums were and wanted to show people how horrible the conditions were
He photographed many images of slum life
It opened up people's eyes and showed them how life was like in the NYC slums
Published his book "How The Other Half Lives"

LIFE IN THE SLUMS
Overcrowed- they packed as many people as possible into small spaces
Disease- since the conditions were so bad, many people got sick
Expensive- they were so overpriced even if they were tiny and dirty
Dirty
No plumbing or heat

Why Riis was important
he photographed the slums to show people how bad life was there. His book, "How The Other Half Lives" opened up peoples eyes and made them want to change these conditions
