THE SOUTHERN CAMPAIGN

  • The Southern Campaign, took place in the southern half of the colonies.
  • The British believed if they brung the war to south, they would have, recruited many loyalists in that region
  • The Southern Campaign had many important battles including but not limited to Buford's Massarce, Savannah, Charleston, Camden, Kings Mt., Cowpens, Guilfords Courthouse, Eutaw Springs, Yorktown Surrender
  • Charleston was a major port city, the most important south of Philadelphia, and was major asset for both sides in the Southern Campaign.

BATTLES OF SAVANNAH

  • During the British Invasion of Savannah or sometimes referred to as the first battle of Savannah, the British sieged the city of Savannah.
  • The commanders and leaders of the first battle of Savannah were Robert Howe and Archibald Campbell
  • The first sounds of the battle, USA Commander Howe heard were musket fire and cannon fire and the appearance of charging British and German troops on his front. Howe ordered an immediate retreat.
  • British Commander Campbell gained control of Savannah at the cost of seven killed and seventeen wounded

BATTLE OF CHARLESTON

  • The Battle of Charleston was one of the major battles which took place towards the end of the American Revolutionary War, after the British began to shift their focus towards the American South
  • The Battle of Charleston was a very important battle, because Charleston was the most important city south of Philadelphia. Sadly the patriots lost the war
  • The loss of Charleston and its troops was a serious blow to the American cause in the South.
  • The British Commanders during the battle were Sir Henry Clinton, Charles Cornwallis, Mariot Arbuthnot. The American Commanders during the battle were Benjamin Lincoln and Abraham Whipple

GUERRILLA WARFARE

  • guerrilla warfare was mainly used from 1775-1783, which made a huge difference in the outcome of the war. Guerrilla Warfare consists of hit and run tactics
  • Guerrilla warfare tactics were first used at the Battles of Lexington and Concord by the Patriots.
  • George Washington sometimes used Guerrilla tactics in battles, raids, and ambushes.
  • other Americans that used Guerrilla Warfare tactics against the British were William R. Davie, David Wooster, Francis Marion, Shadrach Inman, Daniel Morgan, Morgan's riflemen,

GUILFORD COURTHOUSE

  • The Battle of Guilford Courthouse occurred in the modern day city Greensboro N.C.
  • The American Commander was Nathaniel Greene and the British Commander was Charles Cornwallis
  • The British were outnumbered more than two to one at the battle yet defeated the American army; however, in doing so they lost over a quarter of their men in the fighting.
  • Many historians say the battle was the "largest and most hotly contested" battle of the American Revolutionary War and led to the surrender of British at Yorktown.

BATTLE OF KINGS MOUNTAIN

  • USA commanders during the battle of Kings Mountain were James Johnston, William Campbell, John Sevier, Frederick Hambright, Joseph McDowell, Benjamin Cleveland, James Williams, Isaac Shelby, Joseph Winston, William Chronicle
  • British Commanders were Patrick Ferguson and Abraham DePeyster
  • The Battle of Kings Mountain was a great victory in South Carolina for the Patriot forces over the British forces in the Southern campaign of the American Revolutionary War.
  • The Battle of Kings Mountain lasted 1 hour and 5 mins. The Loyalists suffered 290 killed, 163 wounded, and 668 taken prisoner. The Patriot militia suffered 29 killed and 58 wounded. This was a great victory to patriot forces

BATTLE OF EUTAW SPRINGS

  • The American Commander was Nathaniel Greene and the British Commander was Alexander Stewart
  • The Battle of Eutaw Springs took place in modern-day Eutawville, South Carolina
  • The British took 60 prisoners and two artillery guns from the Patriots
  • Even though the British won a victory they lost in strategy. Their inability to stop Greene's operations forced them to leave most of their conquests in the South.

CONCLUSION

  • The Southern Campaign was important to the British as many loyalists were in the South.
  • Even though the British started the Southern Campaign, the Americans ended it with the surrender of the British at Yorktown.
  • South Carolina was politically divided and the end of the war and the southern campaign was good news to ease tensions with the low and back country
  • Lastly the Southern Campaign was a crucial part to the American Revolutionary War which eventually led to the birth of a new nation.
