The Northwest Ordinance

The Northwest Ordinance was a command that the Northwest territory be divided into smaller territories.

Congress would...

• name a governor and 3 judges
•  At 5,000 adult males = a legislature
• At 60,000 adult males = a petition

Finally when the congress ratified the petition they could stand as one state.

The bill of rights.

The Bill Of Rights amendments would guarantee freedom by placing specific limits on government.

Chapter 11

The Louisiana Purchase.

Late 1700's

• Spain had land west of the Mississippi
• France took over the land.
• They also had a port south of New Orleans

• We wanted the land
• Offered France $2 million for the port
• France turned it down
• France said we could pay $15 million for the whole Louisiana territory
• We agreed

Lewis and Clark

Exploring the land

• Thomas Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to explore
• We hoped to find a water route to the Pacific
• We met new people and animals
• We also had the help of the Indians 
• Unfortunately we didn't find the route
