CATHOLICS

  • Majority of the population in Marikina
  • Marikina was a missionary central during Spanish times
  • 5 large, main Catholic churches
  • Over 20 chapels
  • Allowed Marikina Christmas Festival

IGLESIA NI CRISTO

  • Second largest religion in Marikina
  • Treated fairly by locals
  • 4 major churches in Marikina
  • Churches are large, enough to fit many people
  • Not a minority, so does not feel isolated

HINDUISM, ISLAM & BUDDHISM

  • Minority religions
  • Not as welcomed, since minority
  • Very few churches/temples
  • Some people of this religion,
  • have to go elsewhere to find their church

  • Islam came from our brothers in Mindanao

HOW DOES THIS AFFECT MARIKINA?

  • the Catholic religion. Even the sapatos festival
  • (see background) involves Catholic faith
  • Due to the varied cultures here, Marikina also celebrates
  • the Rehiyon-Rehiyon, a festival showcasing its cultures
