THE SCARLET LETTER

Book by Nathaniel Hawthorne Presentation by Andrew Rodriguez P.2
Hello, my name is Andrew Rodriguez, and today I will be showing you how religion negatively affects the wellbeing of people.

How does religion negatively affect the wellbeing of people?

Society has many examples of how religion can negatively affect individuals wellbeing. In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Scarlet Letter, religion plays a huge role in affecting the lives of the characters in the novel. Although there are many ways religion impacts the lives of humans, it mainly affects the health of individuals, the impact on women, and platforms for manipulation.

CHILDREN METAPHOR

Families’ religion may prevent them from seeking medical attention, such as receiving religious exemption from vaccination for their children, therefore endangering the wellbeing of the child. This makes the child more likely to contract vaccine-preventable diseases, such as measles and pertussis, than if the child would receive vaccination. In a study by the New York State Department of Health in New York, children who received religious exemption were found to be more susceptible to measles and whooping cough than those who did.

In The Scarlet Letter, Dimmesdale’s religion made him feel so guilty that it severely affected his health.

WOMEN

In a study from the country Bangladesh, it is shown that most women accept physical violence as a general norm because that is what their religion tells them to believe. Although other factors such as wealth index, education, and geographical division took a role, religion was the most significant factor contributing to the belief.

Similarly, in The Scarlet Letter, her religion led Hester to believe that her punishment was well deserved, when in reality, it was unfair and cruel.

Today in the Middle East, many manipulate religion to purse violence and retribution. One example is Jihad in Muslim religion, where the Islamic State would spread across the Middle East through violent means. The Islamic State would grow according to their desired goals and use their religion as a reason to justify what they have done.

In The Scarlet Letter, Chillingsworth receives retribution from guilting Dimmesdale.

Although “The Scarlet Letter” was written a long time ago, readers can see examples of religion impacting the lives of characters such as Dimmesdale, Hester, and Chillingsworth. Since it is against their belief, individuals can refuse medical help. Because women believe that physical violence is natural, they stand by powerless to stop it. Many use religion as a shortcut to accomplish their own wishes and desires.
