Movable joints:
Allow movement
Held together by connective tissue: ligaments.
Cartilage: connective tissue more flexible than bone, cushions the ends of bones so they don't rub together.

Type of joint determines movement

  • Hinge: knee, elbow

Bone structure

  • Outer membrane
  • Compact bone
  • Spongy bone
  • Marrow

Outer membrane

Blood vessels and nerves enter and leave through membrane

Compact bone

Hard and dense, small canals carry blood vessels and nerves

Spongy bone

Like a sponge, has many spaces, lightweight but strong

Marrow: soft connective tissues found in spaces in bone. Red marrow produces the body's blood cells. Yellow marrow stores fat for energy reserve.

Major bones

  • Skull
  • Humerus, femur
  • Vertebrae
  • Ribs
  • Pelvic bone
