DISCOVERY

  • American College of Chest Physicians
  • American Society of Critical Care Medicine
  • Clarified the treatment and diagnosis
  • 1992 defined the origin of noninfectious and infectious

INFECTIOUS CAUSES

  • Complication in surgery
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Adrenal insufficiency
  • Complicated aortic aneurysm
  • Cardiac tamponade

INFECTIOUS CAUSES

  • Anaphylaxis
  • Drug overdose

  • Fever under 36 degrees C
  • Heart rate more than 90 beats per min.
  • More than 20 breaths per min.

SYMPTOMS

  • Abnormal white blood cells count
  • Arterial carbon dioxide tension less than 32mm Hg

HOW DO YOU GET IT?

  • Sepsis leads to SIRS
  • Only when infectious
  • Septic shock
  • Sever sepsis

SEPTIC SHOCK

SEVER SEPSIS WITH HYPOTENSION & MUST MAINTAIN BP

SEVER SEPSIS

SEPSIS WITH ORGAN HYPOPERFUSION

TREATMENT (SURGERY)

  • Drain abcesses of infection
  • Prosthetic devices are removed
  • Patients have appropriate surgeries
  • Rarely needed

TREATMENT (DIET)

  • Enternal feedings
  • Argnine
  • Omega 3 fatty acids

TREATMENT (ACTIVITY)

  • Patients are in bed
  • Medical activities to prevent complication(DVT)

TREATMENT (TRANSFER)

  • Maintains organ function
  • Prevents complications
  • Includes interventions
  • Good nurse care prevents skin breakdown
  • Therapy ex:insulin and steroids

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

  • Related to inflammation & organ dysfunction and failure
  • Diagnosed when they have 2 or more symptoms
  • Cause acute lung injury and shock
  • Cause acute kidney injury
  • Cause multiple organ dysfunction syndrome
