PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Bessemer's Early life
- Born in Charlton Hertfordshire in 1813
- Showed prestige for engineering during a young age
- Father was an Engineer and type founder
- Henry Bessemer was mostly self taught as a child
- Recieved a Knighthood in 1879
Sir Henry Bessemer was born in Hertfordshire England in 1813. Bessemer's father was an type founder and a member of the French Academy of Science. During Bessemer's early years Bessemer showed great interest in engineering
Bessemer's important inventions
- easy to make brass powder
- Mortars
- Bessemer Process/convertor
During Bessemer's early years he invented a cheap way to make "Gold Paint" using brass powder, Bessemer kept this invention secret for twenty years so no one knows when it was invented. By selling cheap Gold Paint Bessemer was able to fund his future inventions such as Mortars which he patented in 1854.
In 1854 Sir Henry Bessemer Patented Mortars which were a long rod shaped projectile that had rifling. Mortars were more accurate than cannons but it used more energy to fire a mortar so Henry Bessemer searched for a way to make stronger steel.
In 1856 Henry Bessemer patented The Bessemer Converter which was a method Bessemer discovered trying to make cheap steel. Bessemer learned that by running cool air over molten pig iron it burned off the carbon which left steel.
