SIR GAWAIN AND

THE CHALLENGE

• The Green Knight came to king Arthur's feast
• Arthur welcomes him in
• The Green Knight carried a large green battle axe and holly
• The Green Knight had long green hair and was dressed in all green
• The Green Knight challenges the worthiest knight to a game

THE GAME

• Knight will attempt to cut Green Knight's head off
• 1 year and 1 day later, knight must find Green Knight
• Green knight must then cut knight's head off
• Arthur says he will play the game because he is the best knight
• Sir Gawain takes Arthur's place in order to protect his King

THE GAME (CONT.)

• Gawain cuts the Green Knight's head off
• The Green Knight picks up his head and rides out
• Gawain knows he must go and finish the game eventually

THE JOURNEY

• Sir Gawain sets off to find the Green Knight
• On his way he meets the Lady of the Castle
• She tries to offer him a token
• Gawain rejects her offer
• The lady gives Gawain a kiss each day he sees her (3)

THE JOURNEY (CONT.)

• Finally, the lady gives Gawain a green girdle
• She says that it will protect him in battle
• Sir Gawain cannot be stabbed/killed while wearing it
• Sir Gawain accepts this gift and wears it
• He continues to find the Green Knight feeling guilty

PAYBACK

• Sir Gawain arrives at the cave where the Green Knight is
• He hears a loud sound of an axe being sharpened
• The Green Knight is sharpening his giant axe
• He sees Sir Gawain and tells him to enter
• Gawain bends over so the Green Knight may strike him

PAYBACK (CONT.)

• Gawain flinches as the Green Knight swings
• The Green Knight stops and does not hit Gawain
• Gawain promises he will not flinch again
• The green knight begins to swing but Gawain flinches again
• The Green Knight slightly cuts his neck

The End
The Green knight tells that his wife was the lady of the castle. Sir Gawain is so embarrassed that he leaves the kingdom and does not stay for the holiday.
