SIR GAWAIN AND THE GREEN KNIGHT

THE GREEN KNIGHT CHALLENGES THE KING'S KNIGHTS

  • We open on the introduction of the Green Knight, whose horse, skin and clothes are all green
  • The Green Knight enters where the Knights of the Round Table are celebrating New Yeas
  • The Green Knight challenges Arthur to strike him down with one blow
  • And in return, a year from that day the Green Knight gets to hit Arthur once
  • Sir Gawain volunteers to take Arthur's place, both for personal glory and love for Arthur

THE GAME BEGINS

  • Sir Gawain attacks the Green Knight, and cuts off his head
  • The Knight picks up his own cut off head and gets on his horse
  • He reminds Sir Gawain to travel to the Green Chapel
  • The Green Knight then leaves
  • Gawain then sets out for the Green Chapel

GAWAIN GOES TO LORD BERTILAK'S CASTLE

  • Sir Gawain goes to Lord Bertilak's Castle, on the way to the Chapel.
  • He meets Lady Bertilak, who tries to seduce him.
  • Lady Bertilak gives him a sash that she claims is magical.
  • Gawain accepts it, but he does not really believe in it.
  • Gawain goes to the Green Chapel

GAWAIN GOES TO THE GREEN CHAPEL

  • Gawain is afraid when he goes to the Green Chapel.
  • He believes that there is a devilish quality to the Chapel.
  • Gawain hears the sharpening of a blade.
  • He then sees the Green Knight

THE GREEN KNIGHT GETS HIS TURN

  • The Green Knight swings but Gawian flinches.
  • The Green Knight then swings again but Gawain does not flinch this time.
  • The Green Knight mildly cuts Gawain's neck twice.
  • He explains to Gawain that he is Lord Bertilak. His wife was seducing Gawain on his orders.
  • He only accepted two kisses, so he only got struck twice. He then allows Gawain to leave.
